The Best Vegetarian Restaurants In Edinburgh

With the growing popularity of different diets, I have always stuck with vegetarianism. It's what I know, it's what I like and it's how I live. This means that everywhere I travel I like to find the restaurants that have the very best options for me and my friends no matter what their diet. Edinburgh has to be one of the easiest places to find restaurants that cater to all, particularly vegetarian/vegan restaurants. This is presumably because they have so many people visiting the city at all times of the year. If you're heading to Edinburgh soon, get yourself to these restaurants for great food.

Pin for later:

Henderson's
The most popular of them all is Henderson's on Hanover Street. They've been open as a veggie restaurant since 1962 making it the first and oldest veggie restaurant to open in Edinburgh. This is because they are inventive with their food and don't just serve you the plain old mac and cheese, you can definitely expect more than just a cheese sandwich or mushroom risotto from here. Their slogan is "eat better, live better" which is so fitting to the high quality, locally sourced food they serve. It's a favourite with veggie's and vegans in the area.

David Bann
On St Mary's Street you will find David Bann, they cater for both vegetarians and vegans with their varied menu with recipes from all over the world. This is another restaurant this is inventive with it's dishes, meaning you will get a taste sensation rather than a disappointment. I'd say that David Bann is slightly more upmarket than the other restaurants listed, but worth the money and a great place to take a date! Note that they don't take bookings during the Fringe so just turn up and they will find you a table.

Kalpna
This is my favourite of all the restaurants on this list, but only because I adore Indian food more than any other food. They have won awards for their vegetarian dishes and have been open for over 40 years. They try to source locally when they can, and they have vegan food as well. It says a lot when an owner is passionate about providing the best food for their customers and I'd say that Kalpna value that above anything else. Definitely worth a visit if you like Indian cuisine or if you're looking for something a bit different.

The Forest Cafe
Everything on The Forest Cafe's menu is vegetarian, and they do also have vegan option available. You can find this volunteer run free arts and events space and cafe on Lauriston Place in Edinburgh. They provide a unique environment with performances, gallery showings and so much more. If you're seeking Edinburgh's underground art scene, you can find it here coupled with some affordable and delicious vegetarian food.

NovaPizza
On Howe Street, NovaPizza is the place to go. It's a lovely little family-run restaurant that specialises in Italian cuisine. Italian is normally safe for vegetarians, but NovaPizza go above and beyond with meat substitutes like quorn or soy mince, which you don't find in many restaurants. Another thing they offer is Nutella Pizza, which is definitely worth a try
because Nutella is always amazing. If you're vegan this maybe isn't the place for you as they use cheese in a lot of their dishes.

Bread Street Brasserie
Okay, you caught me. This restaurant isn't strictly vegetarian. It's on this list for it's monthly vegan nights where you can get 3 delicious vegan courses for £17.50 per person. They tend to hold these on the first Wednesday of every month and always have an inventive menu of dishes to choose from. So make sure your date is free for vegan night, because it's delicious and reasonably priced.

Pumpkin Brown
You can find Pumpkin Brown on Grassmarket in Edinburgh. It's serves plant based and organic dishes meaning overall their food is healthier for you. They offer a wide range of salads and cakes, even offering hot meals such as veggie chili, sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry and lentil dahl. All of these are delicious anyway, but with all fresh and organic ingredients you get the bonus of them being totally healthy for you too.
